The Instructional Staff

  • The program's instructional staff is composed of experienced computer and information technology professionals with extensive backgrounds in the corporate and private sectors.
  • Computer teaching professionals in committee serve as academic advisers to the program.
  • The committee works closely with instructors to ensure that the current CTA curriculum responds in a timely manner to innovations in computer technology and equips graduates to compete strongly for professional advancement.

Olivia Whiteman, Chair
For the past 7 years, Olivia Whiteman has worked as a consultant focusing on assisting companies to identify and develop Web opportunities for profitable growth. Her clients include mid-sized and start-up companies in a variety of Industries. In addition to consulting, she has taught college-level courses in Java, Web development, and e-business classes at various insitutions in the metropolitan area. She continues to share her enthusiasm towards Java, the Internet, and e-Commerce with individuals and companies throughout the United States at numerous trade shows and through distance learning. The day Java was announced, Ms. Whiteman realized its potential and embarked on founding the first Java User's Group in New York. She is presently involved in designing distance-delivered coursework on the digital economy for communications professionals. She holds an B.A. in Political Science from Queens College.

Laura Brown
Dr. Laura Brown is a business communication specialist with extensive experience as a trainer, writer, and editor. As a corporate consultant she designs and delivers small-group and one-on-one communication training programs for corporate clients, including organizations in the banking, insurance, and accounting industries, among others. Additionally, Brown teaches writing and business communication at the college level and has extensive experience working with adult students through Columbia's School of General Studies and Iona College. As a writer and editor, Dr. Brown has collaborated on a number of business and technology books, including The Art of Analysis by Dr. Arthur M. Langer. Brown holds a Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in Drama from the University of London.

Vincent Fiore
Vincent Fiore has a B.S. degree in Accounting and a minor in Computer Science form Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. He also has certificates from 3 tracks of study within Columbia's CTA program. Over the last 15 years, he has leveraged his combined academic business background and his varied information technology skills to support financial information and transaction processing systems for such companies as Fleet Bank, Solomon Inc, and J.P. Morgan. He currently works for a large international engineering firm as an Oracle Developer developing client/server and Web applications, and providing technical support for the Oracle Financials suite of applications.

James Keogh
James Keogh was one of the first to introduce PC programming nationally in the Programmer's Notebook column in Popular Electronics magazine in 1982, four short years after the Apple Computer was developed in a garage. He has spent more than a decade designing and developing PC and workstation applications for major international Wall Street firms. Keogh has written more than forty books published in seven languages. These include UNIX Programming for Dummies, Visual FoxPro for Dummies, and Solving the Year 2000 Problem, which is one of the first books to address this issue. He has written books on the topic of C and C++ programming and is the author of Prentice Hall's Core MCSE Networking Essentials textbook and cybercourse. Keogh is the Internet marketing manager for a major international multiple media company, has developed Web sites for a major Wall Street investment banking firm, and has been a speaker at the E-Business Conference and Expo held at the Javits Center.

Keith Krecicki
Keith Krecicki is the Webmaster/creative director for a full-service e-business solutions services company in New Jersey. He designs Web solutions for Fortune class corporations for worldwide application. Keith has been an art director for 12 years in the fields of Web development, advertising, magazine design, and illustration. He has a BFA degree in illustration from Syracuse University and certificates in LAN administration, NYU; magazine design, SVA; and computer programming, MITC. He lives in Basking Ridge, NJ with his wife, daughter and their beagle.

Haroon Iqbal
Haroon Iqbal is a producer for Answerthink. He is currently managing the creative and technical aspects of multiple sites for Procter and Gamble. He previously worked in Merrill Lynch's Global Custody and Clearing group, where he designed and developed an internal Web application. As an information architect, he helped organize and create the front-end graphic user interface. Iqbal received a B.A. in economics from Rutgers College.

Daniel Podolak
Daniel Podolak is an art director for Boylesoftware, Inc. in New York City. He is currently consulting at Columbia House, a division of Sony Corporation. As a consultant he develops long-term solutions by architecting front-end interfaces as well as creating a positive user experience. Dan also worked at a leading interactive recruitment agency where he helped design career-related Web sites for Fortune 500 companies. Podolak holds a B.A. in journalism from Temple University.

Rob Reuss
Rob Reuss is a Web developer and sociologist. He has participated in a variety of Web-based projects for ShawGuides, Inc. and WebLab. In addition to teaching e-commerce and programming topics at Columbia, Reuss has taught courses in media and culture at New School University, SUNY New Paltz, and Queens College. He lives near Woodstock, New York.

Paul Henry Smith
Paul Smith has more than twelve years of experience developing Internet and multimedia applications. He is currently CEO of Smith Renaud, Inc., where he directs the development of Internet services. Previously he directed research on expert systems in music and cognition at the MIT Media Lab and has worked with IBM researchers in Boca Raton to develop interactive instructional programs. Smith has been a featured speaker on Internet topics at the New York Bar Association and the New York State Tourism Council. He received his B.A. from Oberlin College in 1987.

Richard Weiss
Richard Weiss has more than 10 years experience in the technology industry. He is currently director of support for a software development company in New York City. Previously he directed technology projects for an airline and for NYU Medical Center that included WAN/LAN technologies, programming/application projects, and Web design and architecture projects. Weiss received his B.S. in applied physics from SUNY Binghamton in 1989.
