The Instructional Staff
- The program's instructional staff is composed of experienced computer and
information technology professionals with extensive backgrounds in the corporate
and private sectors.
- Computer teaching professionals in committee serve as academic advisers
to the program.
- The committee works closely with instructors to ensure that the current
CTA curriculum responds in a timely manner to innovations in computer technology
and equips graduates to compete strongly for professional advancement.
Alice
Rischert, Chair
Alice Rischert has worked in the computer industry as a database
architect, DBA, and project leader for Fortune 100 companies.
Currently she consults on very large Oracle data warehouse projects
for various New York- and Los Angeles-based entertainment companies.
Rischert has been teaching at the CTA Program since 1994. She
has spoken at recent Oracle conferences. She is the co-author
of the Oracle SQL Interactive Workbook published by Prentice-Hall.
Rischert holds an M.B.A. from Pforzheim University, Germany,
and a certificate in database development and design from the
CTA Program.
Douglas
Scherer, Track Adviser
Douglas Scherer (Certified Oracle Database Administrator under
Chauncy and Oracle exams) is President of Core Paradigm, a firm
providing database and IT solutions through consulting, training,
and seminars focusing primarily on Oracle environments. He is
a frequent speaker at international Oracle conferences and user
group meetings and recently appeared in Visions of the new Millennium,
a series on PBS. He is the lead author of Oracle8i Tips and
Techniques and contributing editor to the Oracle Designer Handbook,
Second Edition, both published by Osborne McGraw-Hill. He is
in the process of co-authoring two books in the new Oracle Interactive
Workbook Series published by Prentice-Hall. As the recipient
of a Delmas Foundation grant he worked in cooperation with the
Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Istituto per la Musica, and the Universita
di Venezia on a musicological database concerning printed sacred
music of the 16th through the 18th centuries. He holds a M.S.
from Columbia University.
John Aubry
John Aubry has recently been named database manager for the
American Museum of Natural History's digital library project.
He was formerly the database administrator for Town Sports International.
He has done consulting work for the Columbia University Libraries
on a data mapping and modeling project. He came to database
administration after having worked for many years as a librarian
and archivist. He is a graduate of the CTA program.
Titus
Bocseri
Titus Bocseri is managing principal of The Columbia Group, Inc.
He specializes in systems development and design using Oracle
tools. He is a frequent speaker at local, regional, and international
conferences and presents seminars on systems design and development.
Bocseri has authored various articles in different Oracle publications.
He is a contributor to Oracle Designer/2000 Handbook, published
by Oracle Press in 1996. He holds an M.S. in engineering from
University of Defense in Bucharest, Romania.
Laura Brown
Dr.
Laura Brown is a business communication specialist with extensive
experience as a trainer, writer, and editor. As a corporate
consultant she designs and delivers small-group and one-on-one
communication training programs for corporate clients, including
organizations in the banking, insurance, and accounting industries,
among others. Additionally, Brown teaches writing and business
communication at the college level and has extensive experience
working with adult students through Columbia's School of General
Studies and Iona College. As a writer and editor, Dr. Brown
has collaborated on a number of business and technology books,
including The Art of Analysis by Dr. Arthur M. Langer. Brown
holds a Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia
University and an M.A. in Drama from the University of London.
Melanie Caffrey
Melanie Caffrey currently works for Coach Leatherware, Inc.
as an SAP-ABAP/4 applications developer. Previously she worked
as an SAP BASIS junior database administrator for the same company.
She is currently working with several other CTA faculty members
on an Oracle interactive book series targeted for publication
in 2000. Caffrey is a graduate of the CTA Program.
Xerxes Cursetjee
Xerxes Cursetjee is senior technical lead for datawarehousing
and distributed components at ASI Financial Services. Adept
in Oracle, SQL Server, C++, and Java, he works on customer profitability
systems for large banks such as Chase Manhattan and Citibank.
Cursetjee is coauthor of Oracle8i Tips and Techniques, published
by Osborne McGraw-Hill. In his free time he enjoys playing jazz
piano and reading.
Neeta Desjardins
Neeta Desjardins is a senior programmer analyst with Lambda
Electronics in Melville, NY. She brings with her a combination
of programming skills, database administration experience, networking
expertise, and an understanding of today's client-server and
multitier environments. Her programming background includes
Java, C++, PL/SQL, SQR, and Pascal. She has had extensive training
from Oracle Corporation and brings with her a holistic perspective
on the interaction of hardware, operating systems, database
management systems (notably Oracle), and front-end development
tools. She is currently responsible for reengineering and developing
Oracle-based MRP applications. Her teaching activities are focused
on Internet and client-server based data access using Java.
Amanda
Douglas
Amanda Douglas left the field of classical dance to study database
implementation and design at Columbia University. In 1991 she
joined a team of Oracle developers who worked on the ESPN Cable
Network Inventory Management System, and later was employed
by a well-known Manhattan brokerage firm as a UNIX system administrator,
LAN administrator, Oracle database administrator, and developer.
She currently works as senior data architect for the Bank of
New York.
Vincent Fiore
Vincent Fiore has a B.S. degree in Accounting and a minor in
Computer Science form Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. He also
has certificates from 3 tracks of study within Columbia's CTA
program. Over the last 15 years, he has leveraged his combined
academic business background and his varied information technology
skills to support financial information and transaction processing
systems for such companies as Fleet Bank, Solomon Inc, and J.P.
Morgan. He currently works for a large international engineering
firm as an Oracle Developer developing client/server and Web
applications, and providing technical support for the Oracle
Financials suite of applications.
Lev Gelfer
Lev Gelfer is a senior Sun-certified Java consultant with over
five years of experience in the industry. He holds a bachelor's
degree in computer science and applied mathematics from SUNY
at Stony Brook. Currently he is a consultant for CitiBank and
works on one of the largest Java E-Banking projects in the industry.
Prior to this project, Mr. Gelfer worked on the development
of a multi-platform distributed middleware management system
for Nastel Technologies. His previous clients include AIG, Smith
Barney, and Kwasha Lipton, where he developed client-server
financial applications. Throughout his information systems career
Lev worked with most advanced technologies such as Java, XML,
IBM's MQSeries, ORBIX, Sybase, Oracle, C, C++, PowerBuilder,
and Visual Basic.
Roger Gorden
Roger Gorden is the senior database administrator for YourDay.com,
an online calendar service and which is a wholly owned subsidiary
of deltathree.com, an Internet telephony company located in
New York and Israel. He is a graduate of the CTA Program with
a certificate in Database Application Development and Design.
Before joining YourDay.com, he worked for an environment testing
lab in New Jersey. He has a B.S. in finance from Fairleigh Dickinson
University and over 10 years experience in restaurant management.
Tom Graham
Tom Graham is a principal consultant with WinMill Software.
His duties there include general consulting, internal training,
and teaching public classes in various Internet development
tools and object-oriented design and analysis. He holds a B.A.
in economics from Columbia College and an M.B.A. in investments
and finance from CUNY.
David Heitholt
David Heitholt works as a database programmer for Waterhouse
Securities, a discount brokerage firm. He has a B.A. degree
from Vanderbilt University, an M.A. degree from SUNY Binghamton,
and a certificate in Database Application Development and Design
from the CTA Program.
Mary Lett
In her 25 years of computer experience, Mary Lett has worked
on mainframes, minis, and PCs in several languages. She is now
working with the Oracle object-relational database, developing
both client-server and Web applications. She has a bachelor's
degree in mathematics and statistics from the University of
New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.
Lisa Maliphol
Lisa Maliphol is an independent database consultant specializing
in data warehousing and client-server applications development/design.
Proficient in both Oracle and Sybase, she has helped design
systems for such Fortune 500 companies as AIG, Société
Général, J.P. Morgan, and Morgan Stanley Dean
Witter. In addition to receiving a certificate from the CTA
program at Columbia, Ms. Maliphol also holds a degree in marketing
and international business from New York University. Prior to
enrollment in the CTA program, her computer career focus was
centered on the sales and procurement of PC/telecommunications
equipment.
Ephraim V. Malag Jr.
Ephraim Malag is a programmer analyst in charge of infrastructure
for the Controlling Systems at Deutsche Bank AG in New York
City. Previously, he has worked as both Oracle and Informix
Database Administrator at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY,
and Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ. Malag holds
B.S. degrees in Biology and Political Science from the University
of Missouri and Iowa State University respectively. He is a
graduate of the CTA program.
Sudheer
Marisetti
Sudheer Marisetti is a principal consultant at Abacus Concepts Inc., which specializes
in Database, UNIX, ERP, and E-Commerce consulting. He brings with him extensive
experience in designing, building, troubleshooting database systems (Oracle
& Informix), programming, UNIX administration, and ERP infrastructure design
and administration. He worked at and consulted for many clients in various industries
such as publishing (New York Times Electronic Media, IEEE), telecommunications
(Bellcore, AT&T), and Big Five Accounting firms (Ernst & Young, KPMG). He is
currently working with numerous Internet startup companies in New York City
and New Jersey in designing their database systems and their infrastructure.
His interests are teaching, hiking, and reading. He holds an M.S. in electrical
engineering from Texas A&M University and continues to take graduate computer
science courses at various universities in the tri-state area.
Jay Miller
Jay Miller works as a database administrator for Waterhouse
Securities, a discount brokerage firm. He has also done development
work using Vantive front-end software. He has a B.A. degree
from the University of Rochester and a certificate in database
application development and design from Columbia University.
Sol Morse
Sol Morse works as a consultant for NetQuotient Consulting Group
in New York City, where he develops e-business Web applications
integrated with databases. He has a B.A. in philosophy from
the College of Charleston, a J.D. from the University of South
Carolina Law School (admitted in New York and South Carolina),
and a certificate from the CTA program.
Mitchell
Murov
Mitch Murov is senior Oracle database developer at Mount Sinai Medical Center,
where he is responsible for database design and programming. He has worked with
front-end tools such as Cognos and Visual Basic. He is currently developing
databases for Mount Sinai's internet and intranet sites. He has a B.A. from
SUNY Stony Brook and is a graduate of the CTA Program with a certificate in
Database Application Development and Design.
Ben
Rosenzweig
Ben Rosenzweig is a principal consultant at Oracle Corporation
in the Custom Development Department. He has a wide range of
computer experience from creating an electronic Tibetan-English
Dictionary in Kathmandu, Nepal, to supporting presentations
centers at Goldman Sachs and managing a trading system at TIAA-CREF.
He is currently working on a book for Prentice-Hall entitled
Oracle Interactive Guide to PL/SQL. He holds a B.A. from Reed
College and a certificate in database development and design
from Columbia University.
Marc Schiffrin
Marc Schiffrin has been a software developer for fourteen years.
In addition to many custom applications running on mainframes
to PCs, he has been lead developer for four "shrink-wrapped"
packages. Schiffrin has conducted individual and small-group
training for applications he has developed, and has taught Introduction
to Computer Literacy at SUNY. Schiffrin is currently a consultant
specializing in client-server and Web-based technologies, including
XML. He holds an A.B. in physics from Dartmouth College.
Yvonne Slayman
Yvonne Slayman is an independant database consultant specializing
in designing and building Oracle infrastructures. She has experience
developing and supporting both OLTP and DSS systems for such
major companies as Merrill Lynch, Societe Generale, GE, and
Pfizer. Ms. Slayman is an experienced programmer, having developed
with Oracle Forms, PowerBuilder, and VisualBasic. She has worked
with both Sybase and Oracle, and done ERP and Packaged application
deployments. She holds a B.S. in business management from University
of Massachusetts.
Gnana Supramaniam
After over 25 years' experience in the oil industry holding
senior management positions in finance and corporate planning,
Gnana Supramaniam made a career change to computing. He is a
graduate (both in the MIS and DADD tracks) of the CTA program
and has since worked for AT&T and Enhance Reinsurance Company
on various software development projects. Mr. Supramaniam is
presently a senior programmer/analyst at Teachers College, Columbia
University. He holds a B.S. in mathematics and an M.B.A.
S. Viswanathan
Dr. S. Viswanathan obtained his bachelor's and master's from
Birla Institiute of Technology & Sciences (India) and the
Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay-India). He received his
Ph.D. in computer science from Rutgers University in 1994. He
worked as a research scientist with Bell Communications Research
until 1996. He has worked as an adjunct associate processor
with the computer science departments of Columbia University
and New York University. He is currently working for J.P. Morgan
Investments in New York.
Wendy Woehr
Wendy Woehr is currently working as a database consultant to
the New York Chess and Backgammon Club. Previously, she was
employed as a system engineer for Popkin Software and Systems,
Inc. As a member of their consulting group, she specialized
in data modeling, conducting classes for clients and VBA programming.
Woehr holds a B.S. in Radiological Science/Health Physics from
Manhattan College, an M.S. in Radiological Sciences and Protection
from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and a certificate
in Database Application Development and Design from the CTA
Program.
Ron Zappulla
Ron Zappulla works as a database developer for Physicians Online,
a web community for physicians. Currently he is working on an
application that connects patients to their doctors via the
Web. He was a senior database administrator at ACNielson using
Sybase for a nationwide consumer panel reporting service. Zappulla
has a certificate in Database Application Development and Design
from the CTA Program, and a degree in Professional Chef Studies
from SUNY Cobleskill. Prior to the CTA Program he earned his
living as a chef in Westchester and Rockland Counties.
