Advanced Information Technology ManagementFrequently Asked QuestionsQ: What is the difference between a certification and a degree program? A certification focuses on "applied" learning. We are preparing you for a specific capability, which, upon graduation, you will be ready to handle. This differs from a degree, which does not certify competence in a specific job area, but rather accredits academic performance. Q: Can I transfer courses to a credit program? No. All AITM courses are noncredit and cannot be transferred to a degree program. Q: What are the specific prerequisites for acceptance? Students should currently be working in the information technology field, in technical areas, or as managers who would benefit from further management training. Q: How do you know that the curriculum is what is required in the workplace? The curriculum was designed by the AITM faculty, who are working professionals in the information technology field. The course content is adapted to stay current and is subject to regular review by:
Q: What is the attrition rate in the program? Our aim is to accept students who are adequately prepared for the program and who will benefit from it. At our regular open houses we describe the curriculum. We also offer a preparatory course for students who may need more preparation to begin the program. There are times when work/career demands preclude a student from completing the program. Q: I am a manager, but do not have adequate computer related experience. Can I get accepted? It is important that students are at the right level to complete our program. Without adequate experience, you may be provisionally accepted and asked to complete specific prerequisite courses that are determined by our AITM faculty, and offered by Columbia. Q: How does the AITM certificate program compare with an MBA? An MBA program focuses on academic credit, but does not certify skills. The AITM Program is not for credit or a degree, but rather to certify that you indeed are capable of performing defined tasks in the workplace. Although the AITM Program is relatively new, it has been built on the 18-year success of our Computer Technology and Applications program (current enrollment: over 800 students), which is recognized and respected in the industry. Many of our current AITM students have already moved on to more senior positions. Q: What jobs can graduates expect? Our program has not yet completed its first two-year cycle, but a few students have already made successful career moves as CIOs. Successful completion of the AITM program will assure growth and advancement in the information technology field. Q: Does the program require a bachelor's degree? A bachelor's degree is required for all applicants to the AITM program. Those holding similar or equivalent degrees from foreign colleges and universities may be required to provide official documentation substantiating this along with their academic transcripts.
