The Core Curriculum
Term I
Information Technology N4116. IT in the business environment.
An examination of IT as a crucial sector of operations of most business organizations.
The first part of the course focuses on the structuring and planning of IT projects
and investments, and the analysis of financial returns and impact on the productivity
of the larger organization. The second part of the course focuses on the connections
between IT and product development, marketing options, and the positioning of
the organization in its external environments.
Information Technology N4120. Computer technology and operations management.
An examination of the role IT plays in the daily operations and performance
of an organization. Emphasis is placed on how computer integration can benefit
manufacturing and process industries and how IT enhances the performance of
operations managers. Examined in detail is the ongoing support required of the
IT manager. Students gain an understanding of how the use of computer technology
can make the internal operations of an organization, particularly the output
of products and services, more efficient.
Term II
Information Technology N4114. Systems for supporting management decisions.
An analysis of distributed systems theory with the study of practical applications
of Decision Support Systems (DSS), Executive Support Systems (ESS), and Expert
Systems (ES). The course explains how distributed systems are implemented, managed,
and maintained. Emphasis is placed on the technical issues involved in employing
systems to address semi-structured and unstructured problems. Students gain
an appreciation of how DSS, ESS, and ES enhance decision-making in situations
where computer systems can enhance human judgement.
Information Technology N4118. Behavioral challenges in the management of
the IT organization.
An examination of managing IT personnel, with an emphasis on the challenges
of managing software development and the importance of clear communication between
developers, implementors, and users. Students look at contemporary management
practices and techniques and acquire an understanding of how to improve projects
and performance in an IT organization.
Term III
Information Technology N4112. Web, Internet, and e-Commerce.
An overview of both the infrastructure and the business models driving Web business
today. Examination of Web and Internet architecture, software development, utilities,
components, site development and technology, along with a high level view of
e-commerce strategies, success factors, roles, content, shopping, funding, resources,
community, and other models for the successful management in a thriving Web
business environment.
Information Technology N4122. IT project management.
A study of the roles and responsibilities of a project manager. Emphasis is
placed on developing techniques, approaches, and styles to manage software development
projects effectively. Students gain an understanding of how to manage software
projects from a perspective that balances theory and practice, technology and
people, customer value and provider profitability, and strategies and tactics.
