Cataloging Practices Manual | [CPM-610] |
---|
Belles lettres material is defined in Webster?s as "literature regarded as a fine art, especially as having a purely aesthetic function". For all practical purposes, this means fiction (novels, short stories), drama and poetry. At Columbia, some belles lettres materials receive cataloging in accordance with PCC* guidelines and some receive full level (non-PCC) cataloging. Since PCC records may require extensive authority work and creation of new authority records, they will not be created for all categories of material. Code as PCC level cataloging only if all personal names and series headings are present (or created) in the National Authority File (NAF). Code as full (non-PCC) level of cataloging when at least one of the headings is not represented in the NAF. This document describes the procedures for both PCC and non-PCC cataloging of belles lettres and is intended for use as a quick reference guide, in conjunction with all other procedures and rules outlined in AACR2R (Chapters 1, 2 and 21), U.S. MARC Format for Bibliographic Description, the CPM and other cataloging documentation.
*PCC, or the Program for Cooperative Cataloging, was established as the successor program to the National Cooperative Cataloging Program (NCCP). Its goal is to increase the number of institutions and catalogers producing quality cataloging records. A quality record, according to PCC standards, is one that is dependably usable because it requires little or no verification by someone who would like to use it. All records produced by PCC participants should be completely accurate and have complete authority work done for all headings (i.e. authority records are created at the time of cataloging if necessary).
After preliminary searching in CLIO, search each title in OCLC/RLIN for copy. If copy is found, use it according to these guidelines:
If no cataloging record is available create a record in OCLC or CLIO. Use the following guidelines to catalog the book:

Search all headings (personal, uniform title and series) in the NAF in OCLC (at this time also take note of the class number for the author, if it is present in the NAF). If an exact match for the heading is found or created in the NAF, use the form of the heading and create a PCC record.
If an exact match for a heading is not found in the NAF, transcribe the heading from the book and code the record as full (non-PCC) record or create the heading(s) in NAF and code as PCC level.
LC is creating authority records for form and genre headings but this
project will take a long time to complete. In the meantime, LC has
confirmed that libraries creating PCC records may code form and genre
headings as needed using the format 650 0 as long as there is a topical authority record
for the heading.
Example: 655 0 Greek drama, Modern.
When you create a new record, upgrade a non-standard record or perform variant edition cataloging, place the book with a copy of the bibliographic and copy holdings records along with any new authority headings, into your supervisor mailbox. Mark the top of the printout "BL review" and the headings on the printout of the bib record as either NAF checked, new, or 0 NAF.
If there is a class number for the author in the NAF, use it in CLIO, regardless of whether or not a different number has been previously used in CLIO. Complete the call number in accordance with standard procedures.
If the author does not yet appear in CLIO, assign the call number using the LC classification schedules, verifying the assigned number against CLIO.
For PCC cataloging:
If there is no class number for the author in the NAF, assign the call number using the LC classification schedules and the cutter table. Optionally, verify the assigned number against the LC shelflist and submit a local classification proposal.
See Proposing Library of Congress classification numbers for procedure details.
Count as original cataloging whenever you create a new record, upgrade a non-standard record or perform variant edition cataloging. Do not count a call number assigned for this material.
