SERIES SEARCHING: CLASSIFICATION: SEARCHING SERIES
AUTHORITY RECORDS
- Look for an "established heading" in the index display for
the series title in CLIO. If there is no established heading in CLIO,
logon to OCLC and choose the authority file (af in OCLC).
Search the series.
- If there is no authority record for the series in either CLIO or the
NAF:
- If there are records present in the index display for the
series title in CLIO, go to procedures for examining precedent in CLIO
- If the series is not present at all in CLIO, go to procedures for
evaluating cataloging copy
- If there is an authority record for the series in either CLIO or
the NAF, examine the 646 field.
- If the series type field (S/TYP in CLIO, Series in OCLC) has code a (meaning
monographic series):
- If the only 646 field (or all 646 fields, if there are more than one)
has code c or code m (meaning classed together), route the item to
SPS:STD
- If any 646 field has code s (meaning classed separately), proceed
to search for monographic copy and to catalog the item separately.
- If there is no 646 field in the authority record in either CLIO
or the NAF, follow the procedures under A above (i.e. treat it as if there
is no authority record)
- If the series type field has code b (meaning multipart item):
- If the only 646 field (or all 646 fields, if there are more than one)
has code c or code m (meaning classed together), route the item to
the continuation adder in MPB.
- If any 646 field has code s (meaning classed separately), proceed to search for monographic copy and to catalog the item separately.
- If there is no 646 field in the authority record in either CLIO or the NAF,
follow the procedures under A above (i.e. treat it as if there is no authority record)
