Introduction

One of the reasons for searching all series in CLIO (and beyond CLIO, if appropriate) is to determine whether Columbia has classified the series together as a collection (i.e. as a serial or set). In such cases, new volumes should often be added to the serial or set record, even if they were ordered separately.

Procedures

In CLIO, search each series present on the item in hand.

For each series searched, choose one of the following three options, depending on the results of the search:

  1. If the search yields an index display that includes a serial record (i.e. the series title or author’s name followed by a place name in angled brackets), display the record and go to procedures for serial record found in CLIO. Please note that a serial record could appear several screens down in the index display, mixed in with monographic titles.

  2. If the search yields an index display that includes a set record (i.e. the series title or author’s name followed by a year in angled brackets) display the record and go to procedures for set record found in CLIO.

  3. If neither a serial record nor a set record is found in CLIO, go to procedures for searching series authority records.
