Creative Writing Center

The Creative Writing Center offers credit and noncredit studies, in all genres, taught by distinguished members of New York’s literary community.

Columbia University has a remarkable tradition in the teaching of creative writing. Since 1909, tens of thousands of students have studied writing with Columbia’s distinguished faculty.

The Creative Writing Center offers workshops in:

  • fiction
  • nonfiction
  • poetry
  • playwriting
  • filmwriting
  • journalism
  • literary publishing

Distinguished faculty drawn from New York’s literary community work with students in small classes and individual conferences. Nondegree students share these courses with talented undergraduates and graduates from:

  • Barnard
  • Columbia College
  • School of General Studies
  • School of the Arts

The Columbia University writing community offers students the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and publications, including the Writers Club, Columbia Dramatists, and Quarto magazine. Recently, these groups have hosted:

  • readings and full productions of student plays
  • readings by students, instructors, and guest writers
  • visits by editors and agents
  • The Story Behind the Book series of panel discussions, in which faculty members share their experiences of writing and publishing their works

All students be advised that Columbia’s School of General Studies will not accept the transfer of more than 15 points of credit towards the B.A. or B.S. for work completed as a nondegree student at Columbia.
