3.5.2.1 Capture ID

[man-part-captureID]

Your institution's imaging staff will know what the Technical Metadata fields are about, so we'll only pause to comment on the first one:  Capture ID.  Formally, this is the ID generated by imaging software at the time of capture.  We provide a field for it because some institutions may use it as the file name for the image itself.  Since, however, you must hand-enter such data, the database puts no controls on the content of Capture ID.  If your institution prefers to follow yet another image file-naming system (other than the DS-Access generated Digital Object ID, or the imaging software generated Capture ID), you could potentially use this field to hold whatever unique identifier you wanted.  Please be very careful, though:  the field's properties are set to allow duplication (as imaging software may demand it); instead, consider using the field, DigitalObjectID, since it also is allowed to contain hand-entered data, but it rejects duplication. If you plan to use an in-house system for uniquely identifying your images, please consult with DS Central first, to be sure that your system and DS's are compatible.

If the field, Capture ID, is to be part of the URLs of your institution's images, please read and act upon the section in Settings on URL Generation.
