Housing availability varies by program. In general, noncredit or Special Student status does not qualify you for Columbia housing; however, you are eligible to use the services of the Off-Campus Housing Assistance Office (below).

This office is staffed entirely by Columbia University students; hours vary from week to week.

  • Off-campus accommodations are rooms and apartments owned and operated by landlords other than the University and not subject to inspection or approval by the University.

  • The listings cannot be mailed, as accommodations are for immediate rental.

  • It is advisable that rooms be engaged only after personal inspection.

  • Each applicant must show a Columbia University ID card or some official correspondence from the University to be eligible for this service.

  • There is no charge for the service, and all financial arrangements are concluded between the applicant and the landlord.

Summer Session

Residence Halls
University Residence Halls offers summer housing for registered undergraduate and graduate students. Students living in the dorms in the spring semester may apply for interim housing to span the time between the end of spring classes and the beginning of the summer session.

Auditors, high school students, faculty, administrative officers, and staff are not eligible for Summer Session housing.

  • Accommodations consist primarily of single rooms, but some double rooms and large single rooms may also be available.

  • Rooms are located in both corridor- and suite-style buildings.

  • Each room or suite has basic furnishings.

  • Kitchen facilities and air-conditioning are available in some buildings.

On the Morningside campus typical rates in 2000 for a six-week period were as follows:

Health Sciences Campus Accommodations

  • Summer students are accommodated in single rooms in Bard Hall, located at 50 Haven Avenue.

  • Some rooms have a sink, but all have community bathrooms and showers on each floor.

  • The building is equipped with laundry facilities, elevator service, 24-hour security, student lounge, and kitchen.

  • The monthly rental rate is $550-$600.

  • Call the housing office for an application at least one month before desired residency:

  • Full-time TESOL students may apply for rooms in University housing.

  • Housing space is limited; students should reserve all rooms at least two months before classes begin.
