Local 2110Short Term Courses Open to Employees Covered Under the Collective Bargaining
Agreement Between the University and the Columbia Unit of Local 2110 Application to Contract Currently in Effect CoursesPlease see the attached list. Employees are entitled to enroll in one "Computing
at Columbia" course per contract year. Time away from work requires supervisory
approval. Employees may use vacation and/or personal days to cover their absence
from work. If an employee starts a course and drops out for any reason,
other than direction from her/his supervisor, or fails to withdraw from a course
at least one week before the course begins, she/he will not be entitled to enroll
in another course until the following contract year. Employees may carry over
one unused course for up to one year. Course SelectionPlease read the course descriptions carefully. ALL courses, except CUI3131
Hands-on Introduction to Microsoft Windows, assume some basic familiarity
with microcomputers. Since access to the various computer facilities around
the campus is limited, and cannot be guaranteed, you should consider your access
both to equipment and software in your own office before selecting your course. If, after reading the course descriptions, you are unable to determine the
specific course appropriate for your needs, you should first discuss the matter
with your supervisor. If your supervisor is unfamiliar with the subject and
there is no other staff member in your department with expertise in this field
to whom your supervisor can refer you, you should feel free to call Human Resources.
The Continuing Education staff can only provide assistance on the question of
whether your preparation for a specific course is adequate, not on what course
is appropriate to your objectives. In any case you should not address any questions
to the Continuing Education staff until you have consulted with your supervisor
and/or with Faculty and Staff Services. To Enroll: Complete the Enrollment Form AND the Employee Computer Course Application.
Please take it to the Human Resources office for approval. Be sure to indicate
alternate dates for the class selected. The application must have the approval
of your supervisor for each date selected. The forms should then be submitted
to the Continuing Education and Special Programs Student Services Center, Room
203 Lewisohn Hall, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Applicants
will be enrolled on a first-come, first-serve basis. When your class of choice is fully subscribed, you will be offered alternative
sections, if available. You will be notified by telephone by the Continuing
Education staff when you have been placed. You should immediately inform your
supervisor of the change. When applicants have been placed into a section, they will receive a letter
of confirmation. Participants should immediately inform their supervisors of
the date and section into which they have been enrolled. If applicants do
not receive a letter of confirmation from the Student Services Center of Continuing
Education within one week prior to the start of their course, they should contact
the Center to confirm their enrollment. Cancellation PoliciesNo cancellations will be accepted under any circumstances less than seven
days before a course begins. If you are ill or have some other emergency
which prevents you from attending the course, you will be regarded as
having used your benefit for that contract year. If, on the other hand,
Continuing Education cancels or reschedules a course, you may select another
course if you are unable to attend the class as rescheduled. Cancellation ProceduresIf, for any reason, you need to withdraw from a class within the allotted
time (see above), you must go to the Continuing Education and Special Programs
Student Services Center to complete a Drop Form. The Drop Form
must then be taken to Faculty and Staff Services. To enroll in a new class,
the enrollment process, as outlined above, must be repeated.
