1. BACKGROUND

   Over the years, many dept. libraries have changed name (e.g. Egleston to Engineering), while others closed for various reasons (e.g. American Mathematical Society, Philosophy), while still others became independent of central services (e.g. Medical Library). Some locations such as Physics (Dewey) were moved to offsite storage with cards removed from card catalogs.

   In an online environment, such as CLIO, it is imperative to use current, unique codes for each dept., regardless of the name found in card catalogs.

2. PROCEDURE

   When any of the following names listed below are encountered on manual cards, use the current CLIO code or do not code.

   If you find a card with a dept. name not listed as current in CPM-500 or here as obsolete, consult supervisor.
