Appendix F - Uninstalling DS-Access

If you are preparing to install an update of the DS-Access application, you only need to complete step 1!  If you intend to completely remove DS-Access from your computer you will need to also complete step 2.  Step 3 is not necessary, but can be performed to help free up hard drive space.  Step 4 should only be performed under rare circumstances by a system administrator.

1. Uninstalling the DS-Access Application
Note: Before uninstalling DS-Access it is recommended that you make a note of the intallation directories (Interface and Data) in 'File Locations' on the 'Settings' menu.

To uninstall the DS-Access application open the Windows 'Control Panel' and run the 'Add or Remove Programs' applet. (In Windows Vista the applet is called 'Programs and Features').

Click the 'Remove' button to begin the uninstall process. (In Windows Vista the button is labelled 'Uninstall'.)

Note: If you are preparing to install an update of the DS-Access application, do not continue beyond step 1 unless instructed by the Release Notes.

2. Uninstalling the DS-Access Data File
When the DS-Access application is uninstalled, the DS-Access data file is not removed. At this point a new version of DS-Access can be installed and all existing manuscript data will be preserved. If you would like to completely remove DS-Access from your computer, you must manually delete the installation directory which contains the DS-Access data file.

By default DS-Access is installed into a hidden folder. To see the DS-Access installation folder your Windows Explorer settings must allow you to see hidden files and folders. On the Tools menu at the top of any folder, select 'Folder Options'. On the 'View' tab, select 'Show hidden files and folders'.

Locate the Digital Scriptorium folder in Windows Explorer, and delete it.

In Windows XP the default installation folder is:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\

In Windows Vista the default installation folder is:
C:\ProgramData\

3. Uninstalling the Microsoft Access 2003 Runtime
DS-Access runs in the Microsoft Access 2003 Runtime environment. This allows DS-Access to run consistently on computers with various versions of Microsoft Access installed, or which have no version of Microsoft Access installed at all. DS-Access installs the Microsoft Access 2003 Runtime as part of its initial installation. If you intend to completely uninstall DS-Access and you are certain that no other application is using the Microsoft Access 2003 Runtime, you can uninstall it via 'Add or Remove Programs' in the Windows 'Control Panel'.

4. Uninstalling the ieframe.dll
One new feature of DS-Access version 9 is the ability to view images (derivatives) from within the DS-Access application. This function requires the presence of a file named ieframe.dll. When DS-Access is installed for the first time it checks to see that file already exists. If ieframe.dll is not found, or if the version already on the computer is older than the version supplied with DS-Access, ieframe.dll is installed. Any computer with Internet Explorer 7 should already have ieframe.dll, which includes most computers running Windows XP, and all computers running Windows Vista. Once it is installed, there should never be a need to uninstall this file, and doing so could potentially disrupt the functioning of other programs on the system. If for some reason you choose to remove ieframe.dll from your system, it must be manually deleted from the following location:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\
