Adding an instance

The database manager can access any database that is located on a remote system, as long as there is an entry for the remote system in the node directory. Use the Add Instance window to catalog an instance in the node directory.

To add an instance:

  1. Open the Add Instance window.

  2. Enter the name of the remote instance in the Remote instance field.

    If the DISCOVER configuration parameter for the instance is set to either known or search, you can select refresh to get a list of the remote instances for the specified system. You can then select one of the instances from the list below the Remote instance field.

  3. Optional: Type the name the instance will have on your local system in the Instance name field. If no name is entered, one will automatically be generated.

  4. Select the protocol you want used for communications with the remote instance. For a local system, Local is automatically selected and is the only valid protocol. The possible protocols are:
    Note:Only the protocols that the computer is currently setup for appear in the listbox.

  5. Enter the appropriate Protocol parameters.

  6. Optional: Enter a comment to be associated with the instance.

  7. Select Apply to add the instance to the node directory.
