Backing up a database or a database partition

Use the Backup page of the backup notebook to create a backup image that can be used to restore the database or database partition.

Before you begin...

To back up the database or database partition:

1. Open the backup notebook:

   • Open the Backup Database notebook.

   • Open the Backup Database Partition notebook.

2. On the Backup page, specify the type of backup that you want to create by using the Backup To fields. The backup can be one of the following types:

   • Directory or tape for NT and UNIX-based systems; directory for OS/2 system

     Specify the path of the directory or tape device to which you want to write the backup image. The backup image will reside on the disk or the tape device.

     Note:

     In a partitioned database environment, you can only back up the database partition to directories that are on the node.

   • ADSM

     Specify ADSM if you want the proprietary system to manage the backup image.

   • Vendor DLL

     Specify a vendor DLL if you have a user-specified program to manage the backup image.

   • User exit (OS/2 system only)

     Specify this option if you have a user exit that can be called to create the backup image.

3. On the Options page, select one of the following Process while radio buttons:

   • Online

     Note:

     You can only perform an online backup if the database or database partition is already configured for forward recovery (that is, either the userexit or logretain database configuration parameter (or both) is set on, and an offline backup of the database or database partition already exists.

   • Offline

     Notes:

     1. An offline backup requires exclusive access to the database. All users must be disconnected from the database or database partition before the backup operation can occur. For information about forcing users off the database, see Forcing applications off an instance.

     2. In a partitioned database environment, if you are performing an offline backup of the catalog node, there can be no activity on the entire database.

4. If you want to schedule the backup operation, click on Schedule. The Schedule window opens, in which you can schedule the operation.

5. If you want to create a job script of the backup operation, click on Save Script. The Save Script window opens, in which you can save the backup job as a script. You can use this script for performing backups in the future.

6. Click on Backup Now to start the backup.
