Process while

Select one of the following radio buttons to specify whether the backup operation is to be done online or offline.

Offline
The backup operation occurs offline (that is, no other application or user can be connected to the database or database partition when the backup is in progress). This is the default.

For information about forcing users off the database, see Forcing applications off an instance.
Note: Graphic denoting partitioned database environments appears here. In a partitioned database environment, if you are performing an offline backup of the catalog node, there can be no activity on the entire database.

Online
The backup operation occurs online (that is, other applications and users can be connected to the database or database partition when the backup is in progress).
Note:You can only take an online backup if the database or the database partition is enabled for forward recovery; that is, either the logretain or the userexit database configuration parameter (or both) is set on,, and a full offline backup of the database or the database partition has already been taken.
