College composition is a prerequisite for all writing courses. For information about approval for these courses, call or e-mail the office.

Up to six credits of writing courses may be counted for graduate credit in some divisions of the University.

Writing S3001D. Structure and style.
D. Worsley. 3 points. MW 6:15–9:25 p.m. May 21–June 29 and June 1

Prerequisite: College composition or the equivalent.
The writing of fiction, plays, and poetry as related disciplines. Voice, imagery, tone, characterization, and the elements of narrative, dramatic, and lyric forms. For the advanced or beginning writer and for those who wish to develop their critical appreciation of literature. Frequent writing assignments. Supplemental readings.

Writing S3001Q. Structure and style.
R. Montgomery. 3 points. TuTh 1–4:10. July 2–August 10

Writing S3020D. Literary nonfiction workshop.
P. Raphael. 3 points. TuTh 6:15–9:25 p.m. May 21–June 29

Prerequisite: the instructor’s permission based on a writing sample.
Emphasis on personal style and imaginative use of material; book and magazine reportage, biography, the personal essay, and journalistic narrative. Assignments and individual projects.

Writing S3092D. Narrative forms.
V. LaValle. 3 points. TuTh 6:15–9:25 p.m. May 21–June 29
Prerequisite: the instructor’s permission based on a writing sample.
Narrative development. Close attention to dramatic structure and content in traditional and experimental fiction. Assignments and individual projects.

Writing S3092Q. Narrative forms.

Writing S3062D. Free verse and poetic forms.
E. Fragos. 3 points. MW 6:15–9:25 p.m. May 21–June 29 and June 1
Prerequisite: the instructor’s permission based on a writing sample.
Practice in poetic expression, with attention to contemporary form.For beginning and advanced poets. Assignments and individual projects.

Writing S0387D. Editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
M. Johnson. 2 points; R credit only. TuTh 5:30–7:40 p.m. May 21–June 29
Not creditable toward a degree. Introduction to the practices of editing, copyediting, and proofreading. These basic skills and techniques, used by professionals in publishing, are essential for producing good writing in any arena. Attention to the use of a grammar handbook and a manual of style, the distinction between editing and copyediting, and symbols for proofreading. Detail-oriented exercises, conferences, and workshops on students’ own writing. Some discussion of the publishing industry.
