Remember when you were planning your time abroad and wished to speak to someone who had already "been there, done that?"

If you enjoyed your time abroad, this is your opportunity to share your experience with other students.

Your name and contact information will be included on a list that would be given to potential applicants and participants upon request.

Overseas Program Peer Counselor

If you are interested in becoming a little more involved, we will include you in a pool of students that will be called upon to participate in orientation sessions for outgoing students and information sessions about study abroad.

Overseas Program Campus Connection

Every year we host four undergraduate and graduate students from the FU Berlin, Sciences Po, and Paris VII.

This is an opportunity to help these newcomers settle into the Columbia community and New York. Remember your own adjustment overseas?

Appointments are arranged by you and your campus connection at mutually convenient times.

American Language Program’s Language Exchange Program

Columbia University’s American Language Program will partner you with an international student so that you can practice a foreign language with a native speaker while providing English language practice for the international student.

International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO)

ISSO serves the fourth largest international enrollment of any U.S. private college or university with 4,100 students from over 135 countries.

The ISSO hosts a variety of activities for international students and U.S. students ranging from welcome lunches to walking tours to weekend trips.

Every fall, the ISSO also trains Peer Advisors who help international students adjust to life at Columbia and in New York. For more information, contact Ellen Cohen at [email protected] or 854-4297.

Metro International

Established in 1977, Metro International has an array of programs and services that promote interaction between international visitors and New Yorkers.

They are the official coordinator of enrichment programs for visiting Fulbright scholars in New York and they would like to include returning study abroad students in their activities.

Volunteer Program Leader

  • Plan and lead 3-4 monthly student outings each semester for international and American students.

  • Looking for volunteers who are interested in a particular facet of New York City cultural life like dancing, art, film, food, theater, music, etc) and are interested in sharing it with others.

  • Three to four positions available.

International Programs Internship

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of cultural enrichment programs for international students and visiting Fulbright scholars attending colleges and universities in the NYC area.

  • Duration: one semester.

  • Hours: 10-15 hours per week (flexible)

  • September–December or January–May

  • Stipend: $500.00 per 14-week semester.

Global Classroom Internship

  • Assist in planning and implementation of Metro International's citywide Global Classroom program.

  • The Global Classroom is a unique curriculum resource program in which trained international speakers make presentations about their country, culture and history to students and teachers in the NYC public schools.

  • Hours: 10-15 hours per week (flexible).

  • September–December.

  • Stipend: $500.00 per 14-week semester.
