Curricular Options and Classes
What about the July 4th holiday?
Classes for Session I begin on Monday, July 2nd. Classes scheduled for Wednesday,
July 4th are canceled and rescheduled for Friday, July 8th.
Where are classes held?
Classes are held on the Morningside campus. Students in the Summer Program
have access to Columbia Universitys classrooms, laboratories, dining halls,
libraries, and fitness center.
May I take more than one curricular option?
No, you may take only one curricular option. Please note that some curricular
options include more than one course.
Do I need to take all the courses in the College Preparatory Program?
Yes, all four courses in the College Preparatory Program are required.
How many students are in class?
Classes vary in size from 15 to 32 students.
If you have questions about a particular class, please ask the appropriate
teacher at the Open House or contact the Information
Center.
How much homework do teachers assign?
The amount of homework varies from one class to another. However, faculty
members are encouraged to make assignments which can be completed in large part
during the mid-day break with the exception of term-long projects which may
require additional effort. Students who do not use their mid-day break to complete
assignments may require a couple hours in the evening to complete homework.
How much do books cost?
The cost of books and materials varies from class to class. However, students
should budget approximately $35 for course materials.
Will I have access to a computer?
Yes, all students in the program have access to computer labs during the
mid-day break. Additional access is provided on a space-available basis at all
other times.
As a Session I student, do I have to attend the Special Programs on Friday?
The Friday programs which are held during Session I, are optional; but they
are valuable opportunities and we encourage students to attend.
What kinds of extracurricular activities are available for commuter students?
Extracurricular activities for all students in the program are offered Monday
through Friday during the mid-day break from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 pm. Students
choose from a variety of activities including athletics, movies, arts and crafts,
and mini field trips.
Are there accommodations for disabled students?
Yes. The University provides a full range of services and accommodations
to assist disabled students. Upon acceptance into the program, students seeking
assistance should request a self-identification form on which they may identify
and document disabilities. When the University receives a completed form, a
representative of the Disabilities Office will contact the student to offer
support. Only students who identify their disabilities well in advance can be
assured of accommodation upon their arrival on campus.
