About the Courses
Students who do not know Spanish or who feel that they are not prepared for advanced work in the language, but are interested in the literature and culture of Spain and Latin America, should consider the courses given in English, for which no knowledge of Spanish is required in some cases, and only a reading knowledge of Spanish in others.
Students may study at any level of preparedness (elementary, intermediate, or advanced), but they will be required to complete an introductory-level literature course before taking upper-level courses in Spanish. The course in Spanish written and oral style is open to all qualified students whose main goal is to improve and perfect their competence in the language, as distinct from its literature. Courses in Portuguese language and Luso-Brazilian literature and culture are offered on a regular basis, and all levels are open to qualified students.
Language Laboratory
The Language Laboratory, located in 116B Lewisohn, provides intensive practice in pronunciation, diction, and aural comprehension of some 25 modern languages. Exercises in the laboratory are closely integrated with classroom work.
Coordinated tape programs are available and strongly recommended for students registered in Spanish language courses. Taped exercises in pronunciation and intonation, as well as tapes of selected literary works, are also available to all students in Spanish courses. In particular, laboratory attendance is required of all students in Spanish F1101-F1102, W1120, and V1101-V1102. Language laboratory lessons are available for Spanish F1201-F1202 and C1201-C1202 on an optional basis. The times the language laboratory is available varies from term to term because certain times are reserved for use by classes; the hours during which the required individual attendance is permitted are announced by instructors in classes and are available from the laboratory itself.
