Students should register at the Language Laboratory office during the registration period for each term--see the Calendar for exact dates.

Conversation Courses

Students who wish intensive oral practice in German may take, in addition to Language Laboratory work, one of the two-point conversation courses offered as parallels to the elementary and intermediate courses.

In the last decade or so, "performativity" has developed from a basic term in the philosophy of language to a central idea in cultural analysis and cultural studies. Here, "performativity" refers to the making of seemingly objective characteristics and states. In a lot of cases, starting from sociology (Goffman), anthropology (Schechner) and media theory (Weber), it has proved itself useful to describe this performative process according to the model of a theatrical performance. On the other side, one finds in modern aesthetics, from Rousseau to Cavell and Fried, a harsh critique of the very idea of theatricality. This course will explore the usefulness of the model of theatricality with reference to basic texts of this debate
