Admission to Language Courses
All students wishing to enter the language program at other than the first term of the elementary level must pass a language placement test before registering. The language placement exams will be held during the registration period--contact the department for dates and times. Students must come to 407 Kent prior to the day of the exam to sign up. Students who have been absent from the campus for one term or more must take a placement test before enrolling in a language course beyond the first term of the elementary level. This colloquium extends the work begun in Asian Humanities V3400 by focusing on major works of Japanese philosophy, religion, and literature including major texts of Shinto, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
Chinese
Key to Codes
There are five levels in the Columbia Chinese Language Program. Levels 1 and 2 teach traditional characters. Level 3 introduces simplified characters. Levels 4 and 5 use both forms. All Chinese courses use the Pinyin system and teach standard Chinese pronunciation (putonghua or guoyu). Information on textbooks and materials for the courses will be available on the Chinese Program homepage (http://www.columbia.edu/ cu/ealac/chinese/) or will be announced in the first week of class. Students can look at sample course materials and seek consultations at 420 Kent, (212) 854-5031.
Introductory Chinese: for beginners who wish to study Chinese at a slower pace.
Elementary Chinese (level 1)
Z sections: for absolute beginners with no background.
N sections: for students with some exposure to Chinese but minimal speaking and other skills--e.g., students with Cantonese background but not Mandarin, or students who studied Chinese in high school.
W sections: for advanced beginners or students of Chinese heritage with Mandarin speaking ability but minimal reading and writing skills.
Note: Advanced beginners or heritage students who can speak Mandarin will not be accepted into the elementary Z or N sections.
Intermediate Chinese (level 2)
N sections: further development of listening, speaking, and writing skills.
W sections: reading skills and written language. Open to students of Chinese heritage or those with good Chinese speaking skills.
Advanced Chinese (level 3)
N sections: more sophisticated language usage and fluency as well as reading skills with systematic vocabulary expansion.
W sections: practical writing skills and semi-formal or formal styles of Chinese used in various professional settings. Open to students with good Chinese speaking skills.

Strong emphasis is laid on the grammatical and stylistic analysis of representative works.
