American Language Program
Part-Time Courses (Levels 4 Through 9)
Fall, Spring, and Summer
The part-time curriculum is similar to that employed in the full-time courses.
Students learn English through practice in the four language skills:
- listening
- speaking
- reading
- writing
Fall and Spring Courses
- Fall and spring part-time classes run for twelve weeks, and begin earlier
than the full-time classes.
- Registration occurs before classes begin.
- Students must attend the first night of class to guarantee a place in
class.
Course Options
- Ten-hour per week course
The ten-hour class meets three times per week, and has two scheduled laboratory
hours.
This class is strongly suggested for part-time students who wish to make
more rapid progress, especially in their writing skills.
- Five-hour per week course
The five-hour class meets twice a week, and has one scheduled language
laboratory hour.
- Fluency and Listening classes (students at level five and above)
This class meets once a week for 90 minutes, and is limited to an enrollment
of nine students in each class.
This course provides special practice in developing listening and speaking
skills.
- Pronunciation classes (students at level five and above)
This class meets once a week for 90 minutes, and is limited to an enrollment
of nine students in each class.
This course provides special practice in attending to and producing the
sounds and rhythms of English.
- TOEFL Preparation courses
This course provides special practice in developing the test-taking skills
needed to improve performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language
(TOEFL).
This course is not a substitute for a comprehensive English class.
Summer Courses
Three four-week sessions beginning in late May, June, and July (evenings only).
- Each class meets Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5:40 to 8:00 p.m.
(ten hours per week).
- Students attend two scheduled laboratory hours outside of class.
Please Note
- Students who are in the USA on F-1 (student) visas may be required to study
full-time.
- Students who are enrolled in other divisions of the University may be required
by their departments to take the ten-hour course rather than the five-hour
course.
- Part-time ALP summer courses operate on a different schedule than Columbia
University Summer Session courses. Students should plan accordingly, and
must attend the first night of class to guarantee a place in class.
- Before registering for the part-time program, new students must take the
English placement test at the ALP office. Contact the office ([email protected])
for a test appointment.
- Part-time courses are not given below level 4.
- The ALP reserves the right to limit enrollment and to cancel a class due
to insufficient enrollment.
