American Language Program
English for Professional Purposes: Law
One three-week session beginning in late July.
The Program
This course is designed for lawyers, law school professors, and law school
students from outside the United States and other non-native English speakers
with an interest in learning about the American legal system.
Participants hone their English language skills and master the language of
law while learning about the U.S. judicial system.
The program includes:
- instruction in the English necessary for legal purposes
- special lectures by distinguished lawyers and law professors
- visits to institutions important to legal professionals, such as the federal
or state courthouse and/or local law firms
- access to the Columbia University Law Library
Participants will:
- study legal terminology and concepts
- examine historic Supreme Court decisions and current legal issues
- observe an arraignment hearing or trial in progress
- meet privately with judges and/or assistant district attorneys
Those who successfully complete the seminar will be comfortable discussing
legal matters and familiar with the fundamental elements that make up the American
legal system.
The Place
Students in this program will be able to:
- Use facilities at Columbia University, including libraries, computers,
gym, and the language laboratory
- Enjoy New York cultural and entertainment offerings during out-of-class
hours
Requirements
- Students must have a score of at least 550 on the paper-based or 213 on
the computer-based TOEFL.
- Students must hold a university degree.
