American Language Program

The Carlton Arms

The Carlton Arms, a suite-style University dormitory 7 blocks away from the American Language Program (ALP) office, offers housing for ALP students during the academic year (September–April).

The building is also available for the first and second summer sessions, May to early July; however, it is not air-conditioned. It is not available from July 22 through September 12 (including the third summer session). All students living in the building are required to find other housing for this period.

Only full-time students are eligible to live in the Carlton Arms.

The Suites

Each suite houses six to twelve students.

  • Students are assigned their own bedrooms, either alone in a single room, or with another person in a double room.
  • Students share bathroom and kitchen facilities with others in their suite. Each suite has two bathrooms—one for males, one for females.
  • All suites are coed.
  • All double rooms are single sex.
  • Rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Every effort is made to assign each student the kind of room he or she requests on the application; however, this is not guaranteed. Very few single rooms are available. Most students live in double rooms. Students must indicate the type of room they would like on their applications.
  • NO CONFIRMATION OF YOUR REGISTRATION WILL BE SENT. Only those whose requests cannot be accommodated will be notified.

The Rooms

All students are provided with a single bed, dresser, wardrobe, chair, desk, and desk lamp.

Each student is responsible for providing his/her own linen, towels, and pillows.

Rooms are equipped with telephone jacks. Laundry facilities are available in the basement of the building.

There is no smoking allowed in the dormitory.

General Guidelines

Students who continue in the Carlton Arms for successive semesters are not guaranteed the right to keep the same room for their entire stay.

All residents in University accommodations are subject to the rules and regulations of housing. Students who disobey these rules and regulations will have their housing contracts cancelled and will have to leave the dormitory. It is expected that each resident be clean, quiet, and considerate of other students.
