English for Professional Purposes: Business

One three-week session beginning in late July.

The Program

Students in this program will:

  • Participate in a carefully planned schedule that balances business content with both business and language skills
  • Receive detailed instruction and individualized feedback on presentation, writing, and management skills
  • Analyze case studies from such companies as Merrill Lynch, Starbucks, and Procter and Gamble
  • Learn about current business trends—globalization, employment in the new economy, doing business in risky areas—with up-to-date print, audio and video materials
  • Complete assignments requiring library and field research, teamwork, and business writing: case analyses, proposals, reports
  • Practice all language skills, develop vocabulary, review grammatical structures useful for business

The People

Students in this program can:

  • Study with a selected group of 18–20 high-advanced students
  • Meet and socialize with future business school colleagues and other international business people from different areas of the world
  • Discuss issues with executives at business institutions and organizations
  • Work with highly experienced instructors who publish and present in this field

The Place

Students in this program will be able to:

  • Use facilities at Columbia University, including Business School library, computers, gym, and the language laboratory
  • Visit New York financial institutions such as the New York Stock Exchange, the Federal Reserve Bank, and other Wall Street landmarks on private tours
  • Enjoy New York cultural and entertainment offerings during out-of-class hours

Requirements

  1. Students must have a score of at least 550 on the paper-based or 213 on the computer-based TOEFL.
  2. Students must hold a university degree.
