Introduction to the Nervous System

The nervous system is by far the most complicated system in the body and therefore poses the greatest challenge for students. Anatomy courses traditionally consider only the structures associated with the peripheral nervous system (PNS),since these are most easily seen during dissection. This approach greatly limits an understanding of how the nervous system functions since the flow of sensory and motor information is continuous from the PNS to the CNS. We take an integrated systems approach whereby pathways are followed from the periphery to the brain and then back to the periphery. In addition, the functional neuroanatomy that you learn Clinical Anatomy serves as the foundation for material that will presented in the Neuroanatomy Course in the second semester.
