This course will help students work with clients from a military background, applying their social work knowledge and skills in a culturally sensitive way to military service members, veterans, their families, and their communities. Students will learn to present as culturally competent social workers by enacting use of self within the specific manifestations of culture, diversity and ethics present in a military context. They will learn to identify how combat/deployment stressors impact relationship and attachment patterns, and to recognize risk and protective factors. They will also learn to identify and critically assess the relationship between social welfare policy and clinical social work practice with combat veterans and their families.

Focus is placed on assessment and interventive strategies in services to individuals, families and groups. T7320 Adult Psychopathology and Pathways to Wellness
(Prerequisite: T7100 Foundations of Social Work Practice.) 3 points. 45 contact hours (continuing education units/CEUs). Designed to give students an overall view of the psychopathology demonstrated by patients with the major psychiatric conditions, this course emphasizes background information concerning concepts of diagnosis in their historical context, and current concepts using specific psychopathological criteria to reach a diagnosis as expounded by DSM-5.
