Columbia University School of Social Work

Role Play Room and VITAL

How does the Role Play Room and VITAL work?
The school has a Role Play Room for video recording assignments given by faculty. Faculty coordinates the assignment with the Office of Computing and Instructional Technology. Once appropriate dates and times are setup, the class is notified via CourseWorks on how to sign up for the Role Play Room.

Student Guide for Recording a Role Play
- Video recordings are done in one take to simulate real life and there are no retakes.
- The recording happens in our centralized room where we process the video to be posted.
- The group can only sign up for one session.
- We recommend preparing before hand and having notes as reference during the recording.

VITAL - vital.ccnmtl.columbia.edu
Video Interactions for Teaching and Learning (VITAL) is a Web-based learning environment that enables students to view, analyze, and communicate ideas with video. VITAL was originally created to help students practice their observation and interpretation skills in developmental psychology courses at Teachers College, Columbia University. Currently, VITAL is deployed in a wide range of courses and disciplines across Columbia University, from the School of Social Work to the School of the Arts.

- Role play videos will be posted on VITAL between 24-48 hours after recording.
- Students are emailed when the video is ready to be viewed.
- Copies of the recording are not given out to students.
- Outside video is not accepted to post to VITAL.
