BOOK JACKETS

Processing Physical Items Procedures

DUST JACKETS ARE NO LONGER RETAINED AND SENT TO LIBRARIES. RETAIN ONLY FOR RARE BOOKS.

  1. BACKGROUND

    After cataloging monographs and serials (new titles only), some departments wish to have book jackets mailed to them for display purposes. Since the information on the book jacket could be useful for establishing an authority heading, checking biographical information, etc. remove the book jacket as a last step of processing.

    Caution: Discard book jackets for ANY location being processed for Precat or Offsite.

  2. PROCEDURES FOR MAILING BOOK JACKETS

    1. Turn the book jacket inside out.

    2. Write the 3 or 4 letter departmental code on the right side of the jacket near the spine.

    3. Place the jacket in the appropriate location for mailing to the following departments:

        Business (bus)
        East Asian (eal)
        Engineering (eng)
        Geology (glg)
        Geoscience (gsc)
        Graphic Arts (gax)*
        Journalism (jou)
        Lehman (leh)
        Mathematics (mat)
        Milstein (mil)
        Music (mus)
        Reference (ref)
        Science (sci)
        Social Work (swx)

      *Address mailing envelope as "Rare Books - Graphic Arts"

  3. KEEP BOOK JACKETS ON BOOKS AND DO NOT WRITE ON THE BOOK JACKETS FOR THE FOLLOWING DEPARTMENTS:

  4. DISCARD BOOK JACKETS FOR THE FOLLOWING DEPARTMENTS:

      Avery
      Burke
      Butler Library
      Documents Service Center
      Egypt
      Ewing
      Fine Arts
      Graduate Reading Rooms (location codes: afst, comp, euro, islm, lata, manc, morl, pap, said, sasi, ushi)
      Ware
