FIELDS RETAINED IN BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD OVERLAY

Record Maintenance Procedures

BACKGROUND

Certain types of record maintenance are best done by overlaying an existing CLIO record with a better record from OCLC or RLIN. Replace/merge, however, should be used with caution because only certain fields are retained in overlay. If you wish to retain fields, e.g., contents notes in the existing CLIO record, it may be better to tile both records and cut and paste fields to be retained into the imported record.

Always proofread the overlaid record for duplicate entries. Minor variations in subject headings, for example, will not be de-duped.
