FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

This field contains varying forms of the title associated with the item, whether they are or are not on the item. These varian titles are recorded in field 246 only if they differ substantially from the title statement in field 245 and if they contribute to the further identification of the item.

When displayed/printed as a note, varying forms of titles are usually preceded by an introductory term or phrase that is generated as a display constant based on the first indicator value.

Second Indicator - Type of title
The second indicator position contains a value that specifies the type of title recorded in field 246. It is used to generate a display constant tht generally precedes titles when notes are generated from this field, i.e., when the first indicator is set to value 0 or 1.

blank -- No information provided

Value blank indicates that no information is provided in the indicator as to the type of title. Information may be provided in subfield ‡i (Display text) when a special display is needed, or the value is used for titles not handled by the other values, u sually for titles not on the piece.

Value 0 indicates that the title given in field 26 is a portion of a title for which access or an added entry is desired, but which does not require that a note be generated from this field. Examples for which value 0 is used are:

Portions of the title in field 245 such as part or section titles (subfield ‡p); alternative titles (subfield ‡a); and portions of the title proper/short title for which access is desirable (subfield ‡a). The portion of the title is transcribed as it app ears.

1 -- Parallel title

Value 1 indicates that the title given in field 246 is a parallel title, that is, a title in another language for which access or an added entry is desired but for which no note is generated. When one or more parallel titles have been recorded in field 2 45, each parallel title is also recorded in a separate field 246. Parallel titles not recorded in field 245 are given second indicator value 3.

2 -- Distinctive title

Value 2 indicates that the title given in field 246 is a distinctive title. Distinctive titles are special titles appearing in addition to the regular title on individual issues of an item. They are most commonly found on such items as annual reports, y earbooks, or conference proceedings when an issue is dedicated to a particular topic or theme. Distinctive titles should not be confused with individual titles (e.g., analytics) within a series. The distinctive titles are recorded in field 246 if the in dividual volume is likely to be known by the special title. Subfield ‡f is always used with a distinctive title. 3 -- Other title

Value 3 indicates that the title given in field 246 is another title that appears on the piece but which is not specified by one of the other second indicator values, and subfield ‡i is not being used to give specific text. Other titles include masthead title, half-titles, binder's titles, colophon titles, parallel titles not recorded in field 245, cover titles found in an inverted format at the back of the publication, etc. The display constant Other title: is assoicated with this indicator valu e.

4 -- Cover title

Value 4 indicates that the title given in field 246 is a cover title. A cover title is the title printed on the original covers of a publication or lettered or stamped on the publisher's binding. This value is used only when the cover is not the chief s ource of information. Value 5 indicates that the title given in field 246 is an added title page title. This is usually a title in another language found on a title page preceding or following the title page used as the chief source, or on an inverted title page at the end of the publication. Subfield ‡5 contains the USMARC code of the institution or organization that holds the copy to which the added entry applies. It is used in an added entry (first indicator contains value 1 or 3) that does not apply to the universal description of the ite m. The source of the USMARC code is Symbols of American Libraries that is maintained by the Library of Congress.

Initial articles (e.g., The, La) are generally not recorded in field 246 unless the intent is to file on the article.

When only the ending date/volume designation is recorded, space is left between the subfield code and the dash. The amount of space may be determined by the cataloging agency but is generally one to three blanks.

CONTENT DESIGNATOR HISTORY

Prior to the redefinition of field 246 in 1993 to include all variant titles associated with the item, whether they are or are not on the piece, some variant titles were contained in the following three fields that are now obsolote: 211 (Acronym or Short ened Title), 212 (Variant Access Title), and 214 (Augmented Title).

In 1993, field 246 was also defined for all forms of material. Prior to that date, added entries for variant titles for other than serials and serially-issued computer files were contained in the added entry variant title 740 field which has been redefin ed as 'Added Entry--Uncontrolled Related/Analytical Title.'
