• 1960s-70s:  Diethylstilbesterol (DES)
– No longer used because of teratogenicity
• 1974: Yuzpe [pilot study]
– 100 g ethinyl estradiol (EE) with 1.0 mg dl-
norgestrel; as effective as DES
• 1977: Yuzpe modified (original dose given twice, 12
hours apart)
• 1984: Yuzpe available in Europe
