Petechiae and Purpura
• Petechiae - small pinpoint submucosal or
subcutaneous hemorrhages.
• Purpura or ecchymoses present as larger
collections of blood.
• Usually seen in patients with severe bleeding
disorders or coagulopathies, leukemia etc.
• Initially bright red in color, change to a bluish-
brown hue with time as the extravasated
blood is metabolized.
