Foreign Language Programs

The Noncredit Foreign Language Program

Classes in 26 languages—from Armenian to Zulu—to students who do not need academic credit.

Columbia University offers selected beginning and intermediate foreign language courses, available on a noncredit, reduced-tuition basis.

Students enrolled in language courses are required to:

  1. complete all written assignments
  2. participate fully in class discussions
  3. take all examinations

Resources
Noncredit Foreign Language students are issued identification cards and given full access to the University’s resources, including borrowing privileges at the University’s Libraries and use of the gymnasiums and athletic facilities.

Auditing
Noncredit Foreign Language Students may also choose to audit other courses through the Auditing Program.

Grades and Transcripts
Noncredit foreign language students are assigned the mark of R (registered for the course; no qualitative grade assigned) for the courses they complete.

A University transcript bearing that mark may be issued at the student’s request. A noncredit enrollment cannot be converted into a credit enrollment at any time after registration.

Foreign Language Credit Courses

If you wish to apply for elementary- or intermediate-level foreign language credit courses, you may apply as a Special Student.
