Course Description

Financial outcomes depend on far more than selecting investments with attractive risk-adjusted returns. Households, wealthy families, and long-horizon capital owners face taxes, liquidity needs, retirement spending, insurance risks, estate considerations, charitable giving, concentrated positions, and intergenerational objectives. A strong wealth management process brings these decisions together so that capital is managed in service of the client’s broader financial goals rather than in isolation.
This is what distinguishes wealth management from investment planning. Investment planning focuses primarily on portfolio construction, asset allocation, security selection, diversification, and implementation. Wealth management incorporates those disciplines but adds financial planning and, critically, the integration between the two. Each of the decisions above can materially change what the optimal portfolio should be. In that sense, wealth management is about maximizing after-tax, after-fee wealth, not simply maximizing investment returns.
