INDEPENDENT STUDY

Independent Study provides an opportunity for students to work one-on-one with an architecture full-time faculty member on directed research or projects. The course is open to undergraduate and graduate students across Barnard and Columbia interested in working with individual Barnard architecture faculty members. 

For undergraduate architecture majors, Independent Study course is offered at an advanced level who have demonstrated initiative and serious engagement with the material in their previous coursework. Senior students in architecture may count this course towards their Senior Architecture Elective Course requirement. Other architecture majors or minors may use this course for their specialization, or as an architecture elective course. Undergraduate nonmajors, may elect this course as optional or elective course, depending on their majors.

For graduate students, this course provides opportunities to work one-on-one with the architecture department faculty members. They may pursue independent studies where an individual architecture faculty advisor's distinctive research and design expertise offer them guidance on their proposed projects.
